The problem with this film is that it's trying to make a feminist statement, but the way the story is set up makes it completely ridiculous. It wants to say something about how women in relationships are used for sex and emotional labor, but instead of something subtle the main character is a literal sex surrogate. Not only does it take an identifiable situation and make it completely unidentifiable, but the way the film sets up her job feels unrealistic and nonsensical. I spent most of the movie just wondering what was going through people's heads and how unethical and dangerous the surrogate situation was. Even if you try to read the film as saying something about how terrible sex…

a new york city sex surrogate suffers a vaguely lynchian breakdown that's somehow connected to the tiles in her shower or something... the lead is terrific, but i thought this was formless and facile garbage. sad because exec producer Oren Moverman is possibly my favorite living human.
would recommend SXSW audiences avoid.

The experiences of a sex surrogate get explored in a low-key realist style, even as the plot leans into erotic-thriller territory. The result, from filmmaker Anja Marquardt, feels discordant and unresolved.
As Ronah, actress Brooke Bloom gives the restrained performance that the film’s muted tone demands. But the central plot tracks Ronah as she develops a non-professional attachment to Johnny, an aloof client who indicates some violent tendencies. She stalks him and grows paranoid about being stalked herself.
There’s something very 1970s-cop-show about the professional woman whose emotions get her in over her head. If this film leaned into its trashy, retrograde side, it’d at least be coherent. Instead, the inevitable boiling-point scene unfolds in near total darkness, as if…

Excellent lead. Really dug the films aesthetic qualities but the script was... well, it just wasn't much at all.

Takeaway: Don't lose control over your own life, while trying to save someone else's.
Terrific and believable performance from the lead female actor. Would recommend if you're the sort of person who can handle subjects like the ones this particular movie tries to address.
